Herbal Information

From the wild sweet annie and elder growing in the ditches to purple basil carefully cultivated in our herb gardens, Mother Nature’s own treasure can be found in the abundant plant life, all around us.

We enjoy Nature’s bounty on a daily basis with every meal. It might be in the form of wheat that became bread, vegetables with our meal, and even fruit that became dessert. Botanical life also plays a part in the formulation of many of our daily toiletries. From mint toothpaste to the aloe in our shampoo. Nature is all around us.

Nature’s bounty is even distilled into essential plant oils. In this pure form, the plant’s essence can be felt, both vibrationally as well as spiritually, for those so inclined.

Take for instance chamomile, one of my favorite essential oils. It’s good for many different things. Not just for tea! It’s used in compresses, facials, and baths. It’s antibacterial, an antidepressant, helps indigestion, skin disorders and it even helps reduce premenstrual tension.

Many commonly known plants and herbs are distilled into essential oils. Some of the more common ones and some of their more typical uses are:

1. Lavender: Used for headaches, bruises, insect bites, acne, insomnia and depression
2. Chamomile: Used for indigestion, rhinitis, acne, and other skin conditions
3. Eucalyptus: Used for coughs, colds, aches and rheumatic situations
4. Rose: Used for sinus congestion, insomnia, menopause and libido
5. Sandalwood: Used in skin formulas for dry cracked skin, relaxation, aphrodisiac
6. Jasmine: Used to counteract depression, and also as an aphrodisiac
7. Rosemary: Used to fight fatigue, memory, and for aches and pains
8. Geranium: Used to fight infection, repels insects, bruises and anti-depressant
9. Frankincense: Timeless scent used to fight anxiety and depression and stress

Each plant in Mother Natures realm also contains a spiritual element. While these essential oils are good for your well being they can also help you emotionally as well as spiritually. Those same 9 plants and some of their more spiritual uses are:

1. Lavender: Worn as protection against the evil eye and even used to see ghosts!
2. Chamomile: Useful for sleep and meditation aids, and sometimes used to attract money!
3. Eucalyptus: Another general protection herb. Used to maintain good health.
4. Rose: An emotional herb tied closely with Love. Also used to draw luck near.
5. Sandalwood: This high vibration plant is used to gain visualized wishes, also clears negativity.
6. Jasmine: Used to attract love, wealth and money!
7. Rosemary: Used to cleanse and purify spaces. Repels nightmares.
8. Geranium: Used to draw love, health and protective at the same time.
9. Frankincense: Uplifts your spirits and repels negativity.

One with a “sense” for mixing scents can also choose to combine essential oils either for their health aspect or for a more soulful one.

For instance, rose mixed with a tad of geranium can create a dual note based astrological scent. Both rose and geranium are plants ruled by the planet Venus.

A dual note fiery mixture for a Sun sign could be created with sandalwood and chamomile, perfect for a Leo.

While sandalwood mixed with lavender and a tad of orange could create a yummy personalized mix.

Lavender and chamomile mixed can create a dreamy time scent. My grandmother used to pin a small square of fabric to my nightgown, filled with chamomile, to make me sleepy. Worked like a charm. Chamomile oil added to a cotton ball and placed somewhere near (but inaccessible to a child) will help that child to relax and fall asleep more easily.

The same mixture of chamomile and lavender can be used in your nighttime bath to relax and help one sleep more peacefully.

There’s a myriad of uses for essential oils in today’s busy lives. Why not make time in your day to experience some of Mother Nature’s essential oils, the treasure hidden inside every plant.

We do not advocate the use of essential oils straight. All essential oils should be diluted. Rosemary and jasmine should not be used while pregnant.
